FIRE 2024: the technical forum consolidates its position as the leading event for decarbonised industrial heat
FIRE 2024: the tenth edition is a sell-out success!

The tenth edition of FIRE, co-organised by ALLICE and CETIAT, took place on 19 September at L’Embarcadère in Lyon.
For this anniversary event, FIRE marked a turning point by moving away from its original focus on the recovery of industrial waste heat.
For the first time, the programme covered all aspects of heat and its decarbonisation, under a more comprehensive overarching theme: ‘The journey of industrial heat: the challenges, from production to recovery’.
It was a resounding success, bringing together a large number of industry stakeholders: the event was fully booked, with over 250 participants in attendance!
Profitability, impacts on production, quality of the final product: manufacturers share their experiences
Since its inception, FIRE has placed the sharing of real-life case studies at the heart of its programme. The feedback shared by the speakers, together with the questions raised by the audience, has thus enabled us to cover key aspects of a decarbonisation project:
- How can we reconcile carbon-free heating with a high-quality end product?
- How can we decarbonise our heating without affecting the plant’s overall operations?
- How should we prioritise measures to decarbonise heating at site level?
The presence of numerous industry representatives from a range of sectors, and their accounts, helped to provide some illuminating insights.
Among the case studies presented:
- The installation of a biomass boiler at the Sodiaal Group’s Port-Sur-Saône site, which meets 50 to 60 per cent of its carbon-free heating requirements.
- The concentrated solar power plant installed by Azteq for Heineken in Seville, which continuously supplies hot water at 150°.
- The efficient use of heat in a painting process at John Deere, or how to rethink your organisation to save energy?
- The recovery of waste heat from glass furnace flue gases at Fysol, carried out by Coretec, which saves 2,500 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
- Recovering heat from the baking oven flue gases to preheat the air in the pendulum mill at Terreal / Weinerberger, by CLEIA, to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 15 per cent
- The TransPAC Project: a trial of a high-performance industrial heat pump in the paper industry, carried out by Dalkia at WEPA.
The opportunities offered by heat pumps in industry, the Pinch methodology, and funding options were also discussed.
Fruitful discussions, which were highly praised by the participants
As well as the clear commitment shown by industry representatives to decarbonising their heat supply, participants also appreciated the quality of the discussions during the breaks*. Many were able to make new business contacts during the day.
